6 things to consider BEFORE applying to Volunteer

Finding a volunteer role is all about finding the right fit – for you and the organisation! Below are a few points to help you find volunteer roles to suit you. These tips will help you to search for roles on I-VOL.

1. How far is it? 

When searching the IVOL database, start by putting in your location at the top of the search page. This can be your local area, eircode or your full address. 

2.  How will I get there? 

When looking for a volunteering role, check the location of the volunteering: 

• If you are walking, we advise keeping your search to within 1-5 km from where you live. 
• Where does it suit me to volunteer? Make sure you know exactly where you will need to travel to before you apply for the role. Google Maps(link) is a handy tool to use to check the exact location.  
• Taking Public Transport? Check the buses in your area – do they go to the location at a time that will be convenient?

3.  When am I available?

If you know you have certain times of the week where you are not able to volunteer, you can use the Availability filter on the I-VOL search page.

4.  Can I commit the time?

When you find volunteering that interests you, don’t forget to check the time commitment. If you can’t commit to the days or the length of time needed, the volunteering will not be suitable for you.

5.  How confident am I speaking English?

You might be looking for opportunities to gain more confidence in speaking English. At the bottom of the search page choose ‘Suitable for basic English’.  These are volunteering roles where the organisation has indicated that they can take on volunteers with basic English knowledge.

6.  What would I enjoy doing?

The IVOL database has a list of ‘Activities’ that you can use to narrow down your search. These can be practical activities like gardening, catering, arts and crafts – or professional activities like teaching, marketing, finance or graphic design.
