Good practice guides

Free guides and templates to help you plan, recruit and look after volunteers. Download them and adapt them for your organisation.

Planning

Thinking about involving volunteers? Start here to understand what volunteers expect and how to set up a programme that works for them and for you.

Induction

A good induction gives volunteers everything they need to know, introduces them to your organisation and helps them feel part of the team.

Support and supervision

Meeting volunteers regularly to give and get feedback helps them feel supported and spots problems early.

Volunteer policy

A volunteer policy simply says “this is how we do things here”. It doesn’t need to be complicated, and it’s your reference point when questions come up.

Send us your draft and we’ll be happy to review it.

Common headings

  • Why we involve volunteers
  • Recruitment and selection
  • Induction and training
  • Support and supervision
  • Recognition
  • Policies specific to your work, like child protection

How to write one

  1. Get buy-in from management and volunteers, and form a small working group if you can.
  2. Agree your headings and decide which matter most.
  3. Draft it and share it for feedback.
  4. Finalise and approve it.
  5. Adopt it from a set date.
  6. Review it regularly.

Safeguarding

Everyone has the right to be safe. If your volunteers work with children or vulnerable adults, you need clear safeguarding procedures and, for many roles, Garda vetting.
